The Long Form
When we go to San Salvador we refill our 20 gallon drinking water bottles. At first we just did it ourselves. And recently a service man has turned up. I thought he was just there to service the machine the first time, but he appears to be stationed there.
Every time I see a vending machine, I think about it being converted to Lightning. But my mission at this one was to tip this new guy with bitcoin.
We opened the conversation with Jose by asking him if he had a wallet and the answer was no. The next week we downloaded a wallet. The following week we sent him sats. Then we set up a LNurl username. Then we converted the sats to stable sats.
It has been a journey and we learn a lot from these experiences.
The first challenge was with installing the Bitcoin Beach Wallet app. Jose is not unique when it comes to people not knowing where the app store is on their phone, or how to use WhatsApp, that there is a standard SMS Text Message app and completing the puzzle slider. We have had these challenges with many people and their devices.
We regard these things as easy or common sense, but I’m not sure they are. Not everyone uses their phone the same way. And turns out for some, it is literally just a phone. Not entertainment.
The phone appears to be a cheaper model. The screen is hard to read, it’s too small for the QR code, it’s generally not a fun experience. And this is why I think many people don’t spend the time to use it, because it’s so cumbersome.
But we made it. Jose has his first bitcoin and he has questions. It’s all in broken Spanish but it’s lots of fun for both of us. I think he enjoys learning with us as he seems to light up when we come around and we have a joke.
His first question was about Stable Sats. He really wanted to know how to use them. I think he was worried he would do something wrong. But we made it simple for him. Plus the price had gone up 10%+ from when we first tipped him.
We now have a username for him, as the screen on his phone is too small for the QR code. But that is the beauty of an app like Bitcoin Beach Wallet, they have thought about these challenges and provided simple functionality that bridges a lot of potential issues. There are few excuses with BBW.

We will have more interactions with him I’m sure. But we reached a point of positive progress where we can pay him any time and provide an interactive experience with the Bitcoin Lightning community.
I hope you enjoyed this little journey with us. Planting positive seeds.
Peace and Bitcoin
